Just a warning.....

I undertook my first Mastert Cleanse this past January and was very pleased with how I felt.
You can read my experiences on this site. I journaled extensively throughout my "journey".

Yesterday I had my very first colonoscopy screening prescribed by my primary care physician because I turned 50. The gastoenterologist came to talk to me after the procedure. He showed me the pictures of my colon which show a dark pigmentation in numerous spots he called Melanosis Coli. He assured me that I had no polyps or other danger signs, but that this dark pigmentation could possibly be a precursor to future problems or even tcancer!. Here is the kicker: It is CAUSED by use of herbal products: most notably SENNA or CASCARA SAGRADA!! He advised me to stop taking ALL herbals and that I will need to be miniyored on a regular basis! Overuse of laxatives is the usual cause. I only have used laxatives on a very minimal level ever in my life, and the MASTER CLEANSE was my first use of Senna Tea. I had however, previous to the Master Cleanse, started useing a Colon Cleanse over the counter (health food store) product for about a year befoe doing the Master Cleanse, and that contains both Senna leaf and cascara sagrada thinking I was doing somethngGOOD for my body by getting rid of all the "nasty" build-up in my intestinal tract!. Well, now I have the pictures to prove this discoloration which the physician told me is associated with and may lead to chronic constipation and even possibly polyp growth. I have had no symptoms and feel very good. In fact my DH and I are leaving for a vacation and cruise of the Hawaiian Islands in a couple hours.

Something to think about folks. Seeing those pictures is BELIEVING for me. PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS OF YOUR HEALTH!!! If anyone else has had or heard of similar problems such as mine, please report them. Herb use sounds great on the surface, but I am coming to understand there can be so many dangerous side effects and possible interactions that they should only be used under the careful supervision of a health care provider. I just started doing some extensive researching on the internet on herbal interactions, and of cours my condition Melanosis Coli. I AM under a good osteopathic physician's care. She has a record of all the supplements I have been on and we went over the list and changed some over the past couple years. The only prescription medicine I take is levoxyl (thyroid) which she precribed after lots of tests. I haven't had time to discuss these new findings with her yet as the colonoscopy was only yesterday. The gastroenterologist advised I STOP TAKING ALL HERBAL PRODUCTS until further notice. HMMM......and I thought I was taking such good care of my health. I exercise every day, etc. etc. etc.

did you have a colon screening before all this cleansing too?

i just wonder. i only have the tea once every three days on the cleanse.

how long were suppose to take that other stuff you took?

my father had the same issue on his colon. he never did any cleansing though. he joked and said he even has liver spots on his colon now.

just for you own sanity you may want to get another opinion too from a different kind of doctor to see what they have to say. a nuropath may have more experience dealing with that....

    have fun on your cruise!

I agree that a second or even third opinion is a good idea. Anyone who would tell you to automatically stop doing *all* herbal things is not someone whose opinion I would necessarily trust. (Nor would I trust someone who said to *never* go to a doctor, either).

Anyone who's that closed off to natural solutions when possible to health issues probably isn't going to be the best person to be objective about your health!

And I'm damn jealous of your cruise!!! Sigh... I need me a vacation...

I don't know your doc or your medical history, but I can tell you that in the past 7 days that I've tried to do this thing, my body is telling me this is doing me more harm than good. I don't plan to continue it. There are other ways of cleansing and fasting and detoxing organs for me.

I do wish the rest of you well.

Oh, and just so you know, so far listening to my body has always been right on.

I actually felt good while doing the cleanse. But apperently now I have other issues. I had never taken Senna Tea before starting the CLEANSE and I had only been using the "natural" Colon Cleanse tablets for about a year and I only took them occasionally, not all the time. I have always been one to try and NOT use any laxitives unless I really was clogged up! I remember my mom used to use natural laxitives on a pretty regular basis while I was growing up and I thought she had become dependant on them and so never used them....until recently! Both my parents are stll alive and very healthy. My mom is 80 and my dad 79.

I will discuss all this with my primary physician now that we are back from our FABULOUS vacation in Honolulu plus a 7 day cruise of the Hawaiian Islands! I am exhausted and need a rest after all we did and the 12 hour flight back to Florida, but I would gladly leave to go again in a heartbeat!!

According to my gastroenterologist, as well as much reading I have been doing on the internet, the spots on the colon are caused by the use of Senna. If I discontinue using it as well as some other "natural" herbs such as cascara sagrada the spots should go away. My doctor said that another symptom of these spots is worsening constipation which is really the only symptom I have had and I just thought that had to do with my age or getting close to menopause - apparently not. He told me that spotting like this CAN be a precursor to polyps (I have none now) and even possibly colon cancer.

My colon biopsy came back competely negative. That is a relief. However, I have been continuing to research the condition my colonoscopy discovered I have: Melanosis Coli, which is usually caused by the overuse of laxatives. I only started using herbal laxatives a year ago, a brand called colon cleanse, and than I undertook a 16 day Master Cleanse this past end of January/February. I strongly suspect that the Senna Tea plus my previous use of the Colon Cleranse tablets containing cascara sagrada, senna and other herbs are the cause of the melanosis segrada. Here is an interesting article I found about Senna use:

              Herbs & Supplements:

              Senna
Cassia senna, Cassia angustifolia, Cassia acutifolia

              Principal Proposed Uses
              • Constipation

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Senna extract is an FDA-approved over-the-counter treatment for occasional constipation. Because there is no controversy regarding senna's effectiveness for this purpose, we do not present the supporting evidence here. Rather, we address the concerns that have been raised regarding senna’s safety.

Senna contains chemicals in the anthranoid family, such as anthraquinones, anthrones, and dianthrones. Related substances are found in a variety of plants used for laxative purposes, such as cascara sagrada and turkey rhubarb. The mechanism of action of anthranoids, however, is somewhat worrisome: they seem to work primarily by damaging the cells lining the colon.1 In general, cell damage can be a precursor to cancer, and on this basis concerns have been raised that senna might increase colon cancer risk.

Evaluating this possibility is more difficult than it sounds. The most obvious method is to survey a large population over time, and see whether people who use senna have a higher incidence of colon cancer. However, studies of this type (observational studies) are inherently unreliable, because they don’t show cause and effect. People with colon cancer or other precancerous conditions may become constipated and take senna, and this would cause a statistical association between use of senna and colon cancer, even if senna did not cause cancer. In any case, the results of such studies have been mixed, and overall the association, if any, does not appear to be strong.2-5

Studies in animals have generally been reassuring, but a few such trials, as well as test-tube studies, have found some evidence of possible increased risk with long-term use.6-8

Senna does have one potential safety advantage over other herbal anthranoid laxatives: its particular anthranoids are not very absorbable.9 This reduces the potential risk of harm deeper in the body.

The bottom line: At present, it appears reasonable to conclude that short-term use of senna is quite safe, while long-term use might or might not be safe. However, senna is not recommended for long-term use. Chronic senna consumption can cause dependency, meaning that it becomes impossible to have a bowel movement without it. In addition, there have been sporadic reports of unusual reactions to chronic use of senna, such as hepatitis.10 Thus, if used appropriately, senna should be safe.

As is the case with all laxatives, people with significant colonic disease, such as ulcerative colitis, should not use senna.

If senna is taken to the point of diarrhea, the body may become depleted of the mineral potassium. This is particularly dangerous for people using drugs in the digoxin family, which can cause dangerous cardiac arrythmias if potassium levels in the blood are inadequate. People who use medications that themselves deplete the body of potassium, such as thiazide or loop diuretics, are at special risk of this complication of senna overuse.

The safety of senna during pregnancy has not been established, and pregnant women are advised to avoid senna during the first trimester.11 Nursing women should also avoid using senna.12

yeh! good post. reaffirms my personal belief that the lax tea is NOT needed everyday and pulp and extra water are the better/safer option.

                thanks so much!

There are better ways of colon cleansing that doesn't involve using senna tea, these can include just use psyllium husk and bentonite clay, or using an oxygen based cleanser. Check out www.colonzone.org for more info.
